Renfrew Solar Carport
Construction begins Oct 2021

Renfrew Solar Carport

Powering 100% of Spark Science Centre's annual electricity needs

Powered By The Sun

The Renfrew Solar Carport is intended to support direct community involvement in the development and operations of a solar photovoltaic power project through the financial support of the Alberta Municipal Stimulus Program. The project is a solar carport that will be located at the parking lot of the TELUS Spark Science Centre. This multifaceted project will establish small scale & community solar while reducing GHG emissions.

The project will also help address Calgary’s Council approved Climate Resilience Strategy by providing shelter to vehicles from the elements, while serving as a beacon for the community of Renfrew and the Science Centre by contributing to the local economy through job creation, technology advancement and the environmental stewardship.

Parking Lot Solar Panels

2,400 high-efficiency bi-facial solar panels installed in Spark's parking lot

Electric-Vehicle Charging Stations

Four new electric-vehicle charging stations located on-site

Climate Resilience Strategy

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with a renewable energy source and powering 100% of the science centre's annual electricity needs

1.2 mega-Watts (Direct Current)

Expected to generate enough energy to power 250 homes

Supporting renewable energy

Did you know Calgary, Alberta is one of the most sunniest cities? These solar panels will harness the city's sunlight to convert into energy, which in turn will power the science centre.
