Realm Between Reality & Spirit: June 21 - SOLD OUT FOR THE WHOLE DAY

To honour National Indigenous Peoples Day and the summer solstice on June 21, Spark guests are invited to explore the `Realm Between Reality and Spirit`. The summer solstice is an important day for Indigenous peoples; an opportunity to show gratitude to Grandfather Sun during the longest period of sunlight in the entire year and be thankful for the warm months ahead.   • University of Calgary’s Campfire Chats – listen and learn from Indigenous leaders about the Buffalo Treaty. Featuring Dr. Leroy Little Bear, Dr. Tasha Hubbard and Marie-Eve Marchand. Running from 3:00 -5:00 PM, preceding the night of Indigenous science.

June 21 (5:00 - 10:00 PM): SOLD OUT FOR THE WHOLE DAY

  • Powwow Mechanics, emceed by Hal Eagletail. Learn the science and history of different powwow dances.
  • A conversation with the cast and crew of Blackfoot Skies: Makoiyosokoi (an upcoming 360-degree Indigenous-led film production).
  • The Young Warriors Drum group.
  • Indigenous Art Market.
  • A bows and arrows demo by Stoney Youth, partnered with a flint knapping demonstration.

June 24 (5:00 - 10:00 PM): ‘The Indigenous Art of Sound’

  • Hip hop performances by Many Nations, One Voice for Wellness and LightningCloud.
  • Indigenous Art Market.
  • The widely acclaimed production of NEW BLOOD blends Blackfoot music and contemporary music to create an amazing piece of theatre celebrating Blackfoot history and traditions.
  • Guests are invited to learn about caribou tufting led by Métis artist Janis Laboucane.
  • General Admission on June 24 (ALL DAY) starts at $19 or is included with a Spark Membership, and is FREE for First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.

June 25 (9:00 AM - 10:00 PM): ‘The Indigenous Art of Sound’

  • Hip hop performances by Many Nations, One Voice for Wellness and LightningCloud.
  • IndigeSTEAM robots and drones.
  • Indigenous Art Market: 12:00 - 9:00 PM
  • Round Dance featuring world renowned singer Chubby Cree and emcee'd by Douglas Bonaise, with Darcy Goodrunning handling all of the stickman duties.
  • Experience a fish scale art workshop lead by Moonstone Creation.
  • General Admission on June 25 (ALL DAY) starts at $19 or is included with a Spark Membership, and is FREE for First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.

JUNE 24-25 (ALL DAY): General Admission each day is FREE for First Nations, Métis and Inuit, this includes access to the whole science centre and all of the events.

All tickets include access to the event as well as admission to Spark’s Digital Immersion Gallery, Exhibit Galleries, Brainasium outdoor park, Infinity Dome theatre, Spark Eatery, and Astronaut Ice Cream cafe.

U of C Campfire Chats

In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the University of Calgary will present its seventh annual Campfire Chats — an event created to celebrate Indigenous culture. Join us online as we listen to and learn from a panel of Indigenous leaders discussing the Buffalo Treaty.

Buffalo hold much significance and the Buffalo Treaty, signed on Sept. 24, 2014, recognizes, honours and revitalizes the relationship we have with them.

The event will be moderated by Elder Reg Crowshoe, Hon. LLD’01, with special remarks provided by Dr. Michael Hart, PhD, vice-provost of Indigenous Engagement.

Rod Hunter and his drum group, Eya-Hey Nakoda, will also perform the UCalgary Honour Song.

The event will feature a panel of Traditional Knowledge Keepers:

Bows and Arrows Demo, and Flint Knapping

Come and learn how youth from Morley carved their own bows out of willow!! The youth will be demonstrating their skills and their new bows throughout the night!

Troy Patenaude (Métis) will be leading a flint knapping workshop.

Flint Knapping isn't just hitting two rocks together until you have a shape; its a science, an art form, and has deep cultural connections.

Quantum Powwow Mechanics and Science with Hal Eagletail

Powwow Mechanics:

Come and learn about the history of different dances! See the speed and grace they dance with while listening to how the mechanics of their bodies work. Hal Eagletail is sure to keep everyone captivated through his amazing storytelling and sense of humour.

Experience the new digital immersion experience Quantum Sandbox. See how Indigenous ways of Knowing and quantum physics intercept. Indigenous Ways of Knowing say that everything is made of and is connected by energy (humans, water, rock, etc.), it is not either a wave or a particle, but waves of energy referred to as spirit.

The Many Nations, One Voice for Wellness program celebrates the voices of traditional Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, scientists, Hip Hop artists and youth leaders, as they come together in a circle to share stories and perspectives on vaccines in the context of health, respect, community, empathy and traditional medicine.

IndigeSTEAM Showcase

IndigeSTEAM Robots and Drones and VR OH MY!

IndigeSTEAM 's mission is the provision of Indigenous-led and culturally-relevant programming in STEM/STEAM to support a better future for Indigenous youth in STEM. They do this with spaces that are ethical and respect Indigenous culture and Ways of Knowing. They bring in Indigenous STEM role models and train non-Indigenous and Indigenous STEM professionals how best to work with Indigenous youth and youth in general. They also provide the Indigenous STEM professionals with networking and support that recognizes their need to walk in two worlds.

New Blood Theatre

The widely acclaimed production of NEW BLOOD blends Blackfoot music and contemporary music by Peter Gabriel to create an amazing piece of theatre celebrating Blackfoot history and traditions.

'New Blood' tells a story of survival, following a child forced into residential school. The play is being performed at the Rosebud Opera House and scenes draw largely from personal experiences. Some of the Blackfoot cast members are playing their own parents or grandparents.

Come in and learn about the art of caribou tufting from Métis artist Janis Laboucane.

Chubby Cree

Don't miss experiencing the songs of this legendary young artist. Chubby Cree is a First Nations hand drum group in Edmonton that is gaining recognition for their passionate Indigenous music. 12-year-old Noah Green and his grandmother Carol Powder, who have been performing together for years in front of thousands of people.
