This exciting virtual workshop is in partnership with Vancouver Aquarium and Ocean Wise. Streaming live from Vancouver Aquarium's wet labs, experience a 60-minute exploration into one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. Can you tell the difference between an urchin and an anemone? Paddle through taxonomic techniques, dissections and live intertidal critters to gain a better understanding of the almighty tree of life.
The workshop begins with introducing the students to Phylogeny (the study of relationships among different groups of organisms and their evolutionary development), before introducing a range of live intertidal animals. During the program, the phyla come to life through a combination of artifacts, squid dissection and live coastal marine invertebrates. Students will be encouraged to participate in group discussions around the challenges these animals and our oceans are facing as well as brainstorming direct actions students can take to help affect change, including the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and Ocean Wise Sustainable Seafood.
