Join The Geological Survey of Canada, The Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation, Earth Science for Society, Alberta Paleo Institute, and Mount Royal University to explore Earth's long history!

For one weekend only, Spark will be showcasing extra screenings of the dome show ‘The Story of Earth’, hosting special Earth-Science related activities in the Creative Kids Museum and the atrium, and bringing back its famous Dinosaur Hot Chocolate! And after you’ve done all that, don’t fossil around — head over to the Spark Store and get a head start-a-saurus on your holiday shopping for the dino-lover in your life! You’ll uncover a landslide of earth science-themed gifts, clothing, toys, and books that everyone is bound to dig deep.

Special Guest, University of Calgary will be at Spark on Sunday, November 2 with a theatre reading.

What is Under Calgary?

Let’s dig with Paleontologist, Cory Gross! Using our imaginations, photos, and real specimens of rocks, fossils, and meteorites, we will pretend to excavate beneath the city of Calgary and investigate what our city was like during the Ice Age and the Age of Dinosaurs, learn how Alberta’s vast oil reserves formed, and gaze back to the origins of life and the beginnings of the Earth itself!

Dino Discovery: Ice Age Excavation!  

Join us for an exciting hands-on paleontology dig at the science center this Earth Weekend! Kids will become junior paleontologists as they uncover fossils trapped in ice, learning about ancient creatures that roamed our planet. Using tools and techniques of real scientists, participants will explore the fascinating world of paleontology while discovering how climate change has impacted our earth.

      This experience is included with General Admission and with a Spark Membership.

      This experience can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.

    • What can guests expect from this experience?

      Guests will explore fossils, assemble a dinosaur skeleton, meet paleontologists and geologists, navigate an Energy Maze, and dig into an Ice Age excavation. This fun, educational experience is perfect for all ages and provides a unique opportunity to learn about our planet’s past and its ongoing impact on the present.

    • Are food and drinks allowed inside this experience?

      Yes, food and beverages are permitted in the Atrium and Inspiration Stage.

    • How much is parking?

      Parking is a flat rate of $12, or FREE with a Spark Membership. Parking is managed by Calgary Parking through ParkPlus. Pay machines are located near the front doors, Zone 8310. To pay online with ParkPlus click here.
