4-6 PROGRAMS
Use the Forces
Grades 3–4 | ENERGY
Curriculum Enhanced: - 3E: Students investigate and explain how forces affect the movement of objects. - 4E (new): Students investigate how forces can act on objects without contact.
Students explore the forces that surround us (contact and non-contact) through the design and creation of unique marble runs! Equipped with giant peg boards, a variety of tracks, magnets and simple machines, it’s an investigation of the power of physics in a real-world context!
Curriculum Enhanced: - Gr 3-4 Numbers, Shape & Space
Addition and subtraction has never been so much fun! Explore how our bodies can be used to showcase patterns, shapes and number manipulation with a unique experience presented by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. Available Thursdays at 10:00 and 11:30 AM.
Curriculum Enhanced: - Grade 4 - Light and Shadows - Grade 4 - Fine Arts: Expression & Purpose
In this hands-up (literally!) workshop, students will delight their fellow classmates by writing, directing and performing their own shadow puppet stories, as well as explore the fundamental principles of light, colour and shadow in the process!
Curriculum Enhanced: - Grade 4 - Wheels and Levers - Grade 4 - Building Devices and Vehicles that Move
Without a tool, a task can seem impossible…but with a tool, it can be a piece of cake! This is the magic of simple machines. In this playful exploration of simple mechanical elements, students will use design thinking to create their own device and show it off in a classroom talent show.
Curriculum Enhanced: - Grade 4 - Waste and Our World - Grade 5 - Weather Watch
How can tech help tackle the world's toughest problems? Equipped with tools like littleBits and sustainable energy sources, students will design solutions to challenges, all inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Thank you to CASC's GenAction Program for their generous support of this program!
Curriculum Enhanced: - Grade 4 - Wheels and Levers
Remember Mousetrap? This popular board game is an example of a Rube Goldberg machine – a complex mechanism that performs a simple task. In this workshop, students create their own contraptions by repurposing unusual objects to design and build a device for a task of their choosing! Game on!
In this chemistry contest, students race the clock to identity common substances that are indistinguishable without a chemical test. In designing their own experimental lab procedures, they will reveal some of the fundamentals of chemistry. Appropriate attire is key: no loose clothing, hair pulled back, closed-toed shoes.
In this popular workshop, students discover surprising things about insects in the outdoor wetland at Spark – using self-driven inquiry to challenge assumptions and conduct environmental investigations using scientific tools and frameworks! Be sure to dress for the weather. Available: September-October, May-June.
Curriculum Enhanced: - Grade 5 - Electricity and Magnetism - Grade 5 - Mechanisms Using Electricity
Spark circuits and curiosity in this enlightening electrical encounter! Students-slash-young engineers will collaborate to solve a series of electrical challenges. Watch the lights go on for them as they acquire the fundamentals of circuitry and applied electronic engineering.
Curriculum enhanced: - Grade 4-6 Numbers, Shape & Space
Imagine students as individual points on a graph. How would their shape be translated and reflected? Can fractions be taught using rhythm? Spark and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks have teamed up to create this unique math-infused learning experience. Available Thursdays at 10:00 and 11:30 AM
Curriculum enhanced: - Grade 6 Science A: Air & Aerodynamics
Through a few dynamic demos, from ping pong canons and pressure mats to Bernoulli bags and vacuum chambers, students will gain a new appreciation for the gases they breathe everyday! Available Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Join a fearless adventurer as they explore the Milky Way galaxy for life, aided by their very skeptical AI sidekick! It’s solar system curriculum teleported into a high-definition dome theatre show. Please note that multiple classes may be booked in the same timeslot for this program. Available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM.
