An Explosion of Life: 50 years of Burgess Shale Research with Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron

Richard M. Ivey Curator of Invertebrate Palaeontology at the Royal Ontario Museum

The Burgess Shale has been illuminating a fascinating period in the evolution of life for over one hundred years.

The Royal Ontario Museum has been conducting research at the Burgess Shale for 50 years.

After billions of years of relatively simple forms, life on Earth underwent a revolution with the appearance of the first complex animals…. about 540 million years ago.

The animals of the Burgess Shale evolved at the tail end of this event – the so-called “Cambrian Explosion” – leaving their exquisite fossil remains for us to marvel at. These fossils provide one of the best windows onto the origin of many modern animal groups and the ecology of the first complex marine communities.

More than a century after the first fossils were uncovered, Dr. Caron and his team continue to visit the area, searching for new specimens, discovering new fossil sites, and building up collections for a variety of innovative studies.

This will be Dr. Caron’s only talk during his visit to Western Canada!

A rare opportunity to hear from one of the world’s leading paleontologists.

Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron

Richard M. Ivey Curator of Invertebrate Palaeontology at the Royal Ontario Museum and lead researcher on the fossils of the Burgess Shale. Dr. Caron’s list of accomplishments and publications is extensive and his knowledge of the history of the Burgess Shale and the fossils it contains is second to none.

Come to Spark for an exclusive talk with Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron, Curator at the Royal Ontario Museum, as he shares groundbreaking insights from over 50 years of Burgess Shale research. Discover how these exquisite fossils are reshaping our understanding of the Cambrian Explosion and the origins of complex life.

The Burgess Shale offers a rare window into early marine ecosystems from over 500 million years ago. These fossils help scientists trace the origins of modern animals and deepen our understanding of evolutionary biology. This is a unique chance to hear the stories behind the science—directly from the expert leading the discoveries.
