Want to learn how to program robots to sense their surroundings and move around?

This workshop is an adventure into the world of technology, electronics, and programming, all in the inspiring environment at TELUS Spark on August 25 to 27.

An expert in robots and coding from BEC Robotics in Germany (the folks who made RO5IE the Robo-Coaster!) will be leading a hands-on 3-day workshop. Working together in teams, participants will design and build projects in mobile robotics. With just a few lines of code, a small robot will come to life!

What’s in the lab?

This isn’t just coding, it’s a full-on robotics adventure!

Over the course of the 3-day workshop, participants will dive into programming with a focus on algorithmic and computational thinking, using robots built for hands-on learning.

Participants will get to:

- Introduction to Python using simple examples (commands, variables, loops, and if clauses)

- Movement: How to make the robot move.

- Sensors I: How the distance sensor works and how to use it in code.

- Control systems I: A simple controller for distance control.

- Control systems II: A better controller with a little math.

- Sensors II: The direction sensor (heading) and how to turn the robot.

- Control systems III: A controller for rotary alignment.

- Sensors III: The line sensor and how to make the robot drive along a line.

There will be a 30-minute lunch break each day. Please make sure to send a packaged lunch, water and any snacks!

And for the big finale? At 3:00 PM on the last day, Robotics Lab graduates celebrate with a FREE ride on R05IE the Robo-Coaster — Canada’s first trackless robotic thrill ride! (With parent/guardian consent).

Hans-Günther Nusseck / Project Manager and Solution Specialist, BEC Robotics

Robotics, science, software and development have marked Hans-Günther’s career and he still gets excited everyday by the surprises and groundbreaking projects he gets to be involved in. BEC Robotics is a specialist for human-robot cooperation in industry, medical device technology, and entertainment. The are the creators of Spark’s very own R05IE the Robo-Coaster and Hans-Günther visits each year from Germany to ensure she is working as perfectly as she should be.
