On August 21 a rare astronomical event will be taking place, so we're throwing a party!
The moon will be silhouetting itself in front of the sun in a partial solar eclipse – an event that won’t be seen again in Calgary until 2023! Because Calgary is so far north, we’ll see 77% coverage of the sun.
Festivities start at 10 a.m. in the Brainasium. We’ll give you the low-down on the science and beauty of eclipses and provide some tips on the best ways to view it live.
The eclipse begins at 10:20 a.m., reaches maximum eclipse at 11:30 a.m. and disappears again by 12:50 p.m.
Make your own Eclipse Viewer 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
You’ll create an ultra-simple viewer to safely observe the sun during the eclipse. Weather permitting.
Solar Telescopes 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Come look through our solar telescopes to view the eclipse in progress. TELUS Spark’s telescopes are equipped with solar filters to see the sun up close in all its beauty during this rare event. Weather permitting.
NASA 2017 Eclipse Mega Steam 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
NASA Television will be airing a four-hour show with unprecedented live video of the celestial event. You can watch the action from the Atrium!
Family BBQ 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Join us for a weekly outdoor family BBQ with Social Eatery by Roger Mooking. Grab some food, take a seat and enjoy the sun. Note: cost of food is extra.
Our Solar System: Spotlight Sun 12:10 p.m., 2:10 p.m., 4:10 p.m.
Enjoy an immersive Dome Theatre experience written and developed in-house by theatrical astronomy enthusiasts at TELUS Spark. Get a close look at the sun and soar through the universe. Note: cost of live planetarium show is extra - see front desk for tickets.
This event is part of Operation Explore, TELUS Spark's one-of-a-kind outdoor experience.
We'll see you on August 21!
