What's On
Join us for this special Science Café presented in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research at
Iron Wood Stage and Grill, 1229 9 Ave. SE.
People go to hospitals to get better. So why do they sometimes come home sick? Patients can be vulnerable to hospital-acquired infections, such as wound infections, pneumonia or Clostridium difficile colitis. What can we do to keep hospitals (and patients) healthy?
Come discuss the latest prevention strategies to help stop the spread of infections and protect patients, visitors and staff from acquiring these bugs. Hear from leading researchers about innovative hospital designs and new approaches in infection control that are designed to keep people safe from infections.
Confirmed speakers:
- Dr. Tom Louie
University of Calgary
Dr. Louie will provide an overview of what the problem is and why you are more prone to acquiring infections while staying in the hospital. He will also discuss the treatments that are available, with a focus on colitis caused by Clostridium difficile, which has plagued many Canadian hospitals. - Dr. John Conly
University of Calgary
Dr. Conly will talk about how hospitals are tackling this problem, and how research is looking at physical design and engineering controls to cut down risks of contracting infections. - Gwyneth Myers
MSc, PhD candidate
University of Calgary
